The Maher Library is a purpose-built facility which is easily accessible to pupils and is staffed by a full-time, Chartered Librarian, ably assisted by a group of pupil assistants.
The Library aims to:
- Promote reading for pleasure
- Provide resources, both print and digital, to support the curriculum
- Develop the information handling skills of pupils
- Provide study space conducive to learning
The Library holds approximately 14,000 items. This includes a wide range of up to date and attractive fiction, a selection of non-fiction to support the curriculum and for general interest as well as small collections of DVDs, CDs and audio books. We also take 4 daily newspapers and a range of periodicals. Most items can be borrowed by pupils and staff who automatically become members of the Library on arrival at St Bede’s. Resources are managed using Eclipse.net which provides an online catalogue which can be viewed from any PC within the College.
Online resources include Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Philip Allan A level Review Archive. We are also increasing our stock of e-books which can be borrowed via our e-book platform to be read on pupils’ own devices or our e-readers which can be borrowed on request.
The Library is well used by pupils. Sixth formers make use of the 40 study spaces and 16 PCs for quiet study during lesson times and all years are welcomed for study, reading or selecting books before and after the school day or during lunchtime. Upper Third and Lower Fourth pupils all have English lessons timetabled in the Library and complete a “Reading Passport” which is designed to encourage reading of a range of fiction genres. Classes from all subjects are encouraged to make use of the research facilities when appropriate. There is also lively programme of book clubs, reading groups, displays, events and competitions.
